Along with my full time position as a Lieutenant/Paramedic at Wood River Fire & Rescue, and a passion for photography, I am an all purpose computer consultant, designing and developing web based systems and implementing and managing corporate networks.
I have a Computer Science degree from Columbia University which has provided me the fundamentals I have used in the last 15 years of development work. On that foundation I have learned any other front and back end languages as needed. I have been involved either full or part time in development work since 1991, and have run my own consulting business since 2004.
My preferences were always for standards based languages and systems, and I now strongly prefer open source, community based development platforms, as opposed to closed, proprietary systems. They tend to be better designed, the support structure is incredible, and the applications of these systems are limited only to a large groups' creative impulses.
I am a very experienced HTML, Javascript, PHP, MySQL programmer, and C programmer, with extensive examples of tying all these technologies together into seamless systems that produce the effect clients want. I have more than passing familiarity with ASP, Perl and the 4D database. I also have significant experience learning and modifying very complex existing systems.
My goal is always to develop and host high quality, low cost websites that perform how the customer wants them to perform (not just how I think they should be developed!), and allow the customer to maintain their own content without having to track me down. To that end, Greyhound Design as a business adheres to the following principles:
- Greyhound Design is a sole proprietorship with only one employee, Bass. All communications, questions, concerns – along with all design work – are my responsibility and will be handled rapidly and straightforwardly with no “lost in communication” issues.
- A client's data is their data! All passwords, logins, usernames etc. will be provided to each client as they’re created. Obviously Greyhound Design needs access to these passwords too, but they belong to the client to do with as they see fit.
- Clients will have the same amount of access to their site as Greyhound has, as well as the ability to change or have another computer professional change any settings on their site - including passwords - without involving Greyhound Design.
- The “Hit by a Bus” theory: Greyhound Design will make every effort to make the system easily understood by another developer, with no hidden data, no secret passwords, or any other traps that could make transitioning to another development company difficult.
- Small / quick changes: I do not thrive on billing clients for every tiny change they might make, either during development or down the line. If there’s something quick and easy to do for a client I’m happy to do it for free; if it looks like a larger project I’ll let clients know ahead of time that it will be a charged change and provide an estimate.
- Communication: While my other career makes me sometimes unavailable by cell phone, I try to be as quick in replying to emails as possible. Even after the build, if there’s something a client is trying to do and it seems like it might take forever, I encourage them to take the minute to check with me first... I may have an easier / quicker way to accomplish a task that makes more sense for everyone involved.
While I have a reasonable amount of raw design experience, I encourage my clients to work with
graphic designers for very design intensive sites, and I have had great luck implementing websites designed by professional designers.
